Leaving the 9 to 5 Job and How I Did It

leaving my 9 to 5 job

Have you ever thought “leaving the 9 to 5 job is crazy”? Well… this year (2019) my husband and I did something crazy. We chose that the best thing for our family was for me to leave my Senior accountant role (yup… leaving my 9 to 5) and for him (my wonderful hubby) to return to work as a forklift operator. Yes! We CHOSE to go from a $60K a year income to a $30K a year income (ON PURPOSE)!

My Background

Here’s a little background. My husband has been the one to be the steady “at home” parent for our boys most of their lives. It just made sense for us since I had the degree and more potential for long term job growth and my husband’s dream is to be a writer.

But something changed a few years ago. I became stuck. I found myself in a career that seemed to drain me completely and stress me out. Anxiety attacks became a daily occurrence and I just simply wasn’t happy. Stress can do that to you.

I honestly was willing to keep going and just “do what I had to do”. But my husband wouldn’t let it go and this year was the breaking point. The funny thing was, I had finally found a way to cope with my day to day job and was getting by. I wasn’t having anxiety attacks (at least not daily) and I was getting back my joy. Of course, that had nothing to do with my 9-5 and all to do with what I was doing before and after (plus listening to podcasts during to keep my sanity didn’t hurt). But I guess it should have been obvious…. leaving the 9 to 5 job was just around the corner.

The Breaking Point

In January, we made the decision to relocate our family due to family and I put in my notice in March expecting to locate a job where we were moving without any issues. But I was wrong. Oh so wrong.

By the end of April, I still hadn’t received any prospects and we started to stress. Okay, I started to stress. My husband just “knew” it was all going to work out. And he was right, but not in the way he thought. Long story short, we have put off moving and I took the leap to work from home. Not because it was the only option and not because we didn’t have childcare available. But because it was about time I had enough faith to act and not just talk.

So what am I doing for work? A lot! I have multiple streams of revenue and building up more. My goal is to bring my husband home by his 43rd B-day (January 2020). Not a lot of time, I know. But when God gives you a dream, I believe he doesn’t do it halfway. I want you to join me on this journey. Each month, I will post how I am doing and the lessons that I have learned. I will share tips and tricks that I am discovering and try to help you bring your husband home as well if that is your dream.
